Women more likely to order healthy food online: Swiggy study

Women in Indian metros are showing a greater tendency to opt for healthy food. Indian women are 15 percent more likely to order a healthy meal online, according to Swiggy, India’s leading food ordering and delivery platform.

Swiggy compiled health-related food ordering trends from all over India and discovered that Mumbai, followed by Chennai and Bengaluru place the most orders for healthy foods.

It also found that consumers between the age of 25-34 are more likely to order healthy food than any other age group. In fact, they are 25 percent more likely to order healthy food compared to people aged 18-24.

Breakfast is the most preferred meal for healthy food, followed by lunch and snacks. Healthy food orders are 25 percent more commonly placed during breakfast than through the rest of the day.

Swiggy studied the food ordering pattern from January, when people often make new year resolutions to eat healthy, till March. Order analysis from the eight locations Swiggy currently operates in – Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi & NCR, Pune and Kolkata—showed that while Indians have diverse food preferences, from biryani to burgers, healthy food ordering is slowly but steadily picking up pace.

‘Healthy food’ as a segment witnessed the strongest month-on-month growth compared to other segments. Swiggy analysed “Healthy food” orders and found fruit salads have become a popular choice for breakfast and protein salads for dinner.

According to Srivats TS, VP Marketing at Swiggy, given this growing trend, a lot of health-focused restaurants have partnered with Swiggy to extend their reach. Many multi-cuisine restaurants have added healthy options to their menus, he added.

Since abs are made in the kitchen and not the gym alone, Swiggy expects this number to grow as people compliment their New Year resolution to exercise with healthy meals. With temperatures soaring across the nation, Swiggy expects orders for seasonal foods, fruits, ice creams and cooling beverages to go up in the coming months.

Most popular health dishes, pan India, were:

  • Watermelon and orange juice top items for breakfast
  • Protein-based salad (in Paneer and chicken variants) for dinner
  • Fresh fruit juices, fruit salads for breakfast and snacks

 City-wise

  • Mumbai-  Sprout salad, assorted fruit salad, carrot beetroot juice, feta chicken salad
  • Chennai - Watermelon, pomegranate, pineapple juice
  • Bangalore- protein-based salads, juices, oats
  • Hyderabad and Kolkata preferred chicken-sprinkled shawarmas and salads
  • Delhi/ NCR- Roasted chicken salad, oats, fresh fruits
  • Pune- Thalipeeth with veggies, tofu grilled toast, dalia, sprouted moong salad chaat

City-wise, Mumbai orders more healthy food online than any other city . It also ordered a diverse variety of healthy foods. Sprout salads were particularly popular in the city, followed by high protein salads and juices.

Chennai which placed the second highest orders, prefers fresh fruit salad and juices, probably because of scorching heat; while Bengaluru relished protein-based salads like teriyaki salad, hummus bean salad and doner salad.

Delhi and NCR opted mostly for oat-based dishes along with fruit salads and high protein based salads, while Hyderabad and Kolkata preferred roast chicken salads and shawarma salads. Pune trusted its traditional menu of healthy foods, where thalipeeth with veggies (a Maharashtrian dish) topped the list followed by chicken and paneer salads.
