When State-of-the-Art Security Creates More Problems!

In an effort to stay ahead of attackers, some organisations have reported deploying more than 50 security solutions to address each unique challenge or threat.

According to Marc Willebeek-Lemair, Alert Logic CSO (who previously founded and served as CTO of Tipping Point and several other security industry pioneers/innovators), this dated approach of implementing a variety of best of breed security technologies to solve very specific issues, has actually created environments that are inherently less secure than organisations that take a more balanced, integrated approach.

According to Marc, while the security industry was seemingly founded on the terms ‘best-of-breed’ and ‘defence-in-depth,’ these traditional approaches are actually diminishing many businesses’ abilities to protect themselves. Security teams are now faced with integration challenges that hinder threat sharing and correlation, as well as gaps that attackers are becoming much more astute in exploiting.

Too many point products (i.e., layered IDS, IPS, WAF, etc.) are ineffective and what’s more critical is that organisations focus on the nature of their unique threats.

As a pioneer and an early advocate for best-of-breed security, Marc is talking to businesses and helping them ‘reform’ their protection efforts, instead of investing in more solutions, he is helping them implement better policies, expertise and resources – all to close the traditional gaps and create a more secure foundation for their businesses.
