CCTV cameras can be compromised to create a pathway for attackers to infiltrate and steal information from air-gapped networks. A cybersecurity team from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, led by Dr. Mordechai Guri, published research demonstrating the attack.
Cesare Garlati, chief security strategist at the prpl Foundation, said: "This is another example of where devices with little or no security built in have been manipulated. This means that once hackers reverse engineer or gain access, they can exploit the devices with malware and consumers become the unknowing pawns in criminals’ dangerous end games.
"This is an area where manufacturers and developers in particular need to step up and why prpl is working with relevant regulators to educate them on how to make these changes within industry to make IoT security a priority. It won’t happen overnight, but if developers could agree to get the basics of security right - flaws, like the ones shown within these CCTV cameras, will be remedied."
